Bathtub Protocols for Whole Body

This is a rather broad protocol as you can see by the list but one that proves to be oh so convenient when full coverage treatment is needed. Bath time can be the perfect time for a whole body topical application of pure essential oils with attention to dilution and use of an emulsifier like epsom salt to prevent the essential oils from pooling on top of the bath water.

Before going any further, please note that if you're considering a whole body protocol it will be important to know what kind of rash or skin irritation you're dealing with and if it's contagious. If contagious, bathe alone and clean the bathtub accordingly. Even though you've just used anti-microbial essential oils in the bath water, it's best to be meticulous. Also, know beforehand whether or not you or your kiddos are sensitive to an essential oil that you'll be using. It's always a good idea to do a skin test before a whole body protocol. Dab a small amount of essential oil on the inside of elbow and observe for 24 hrs.

Recommended Essential Oils

There are several pure essential oils that I like to use for rashes and breakouts: Melaleuca, Lavender, Frankincense and Geranium for their anti-microbial and regenerative healing properties. Melaleuca Cure-all reputation, effective for dangerous microbial infections, capable of rupturing casing/cyst that protects virus from antibiotics, promotes absorption of nutrients, inhibits fungal growth, faster healing. Lavender Lethal to skin pathogenic strains (dermatophytes, candida/thrush), important oil for immunocompromised such as chemo, transplant or AIDS patients, boosts immunity, calming agent, analgesic, effective for lice. Frankincense is effective as an antiseptic. It can be applied on wounds undiluted without any known side effects to protect them from tetanus and becoming septic. It is equally good on internal wounds and protects them from developing infections. Geranium: Astringent, diuretic, prevents microbes from developing on wounds allowing body to focus on internal challenges, a styptic (stops bleeding) speeds coagulation, encourages cell regeneration, tonic, dewormer.

Emulsify with Salt & Milk

The last thing you want to happen when you're dealing with sensitive, irritated skin is to let the essential oils pool on top of the water.  If allowed to do this, the potent oils could cause further irritation so, a simple and healthy solution is to add 3/4 cup of magnesium chloride bath flakes or Himalayan Pink Salt Crystals and 1 to 2 cups of whole organic milk.  By adding natural salts and milk along with any essential oils you can avoid pooling. Bonus - added magnesium intake is a boon for almost all of us now days because it's difficult to get enough magnesium into our bodies thru our diet.

Usage Recommendations

  • Much of essential oil use is by your own judgement. If you have sensitive skin, go lightly with your essential oils.
  • Use a total of 8 to 10 drops as a starting point.  If your bathtub is gigantic you can increase the amount.
  • Don't soak for more than 10 minutes, DO make sure your body gets fully immersed.
  • Both Melaleuca and Lavender are powerful anti~fungals and can be skin irritants undiluted.  I like to use Melaleuca and Lavender together but I've learned to always use them with a carrier oil outside of the bathtub.  My preferred carrier is organic rosehip seed carrier oil or my Naked Salve that's made with organic coconut oil.  High-quality coconut oil has some rare benefits and combining it with pure essential oils is incredibly healing:
"Around 50 percent of the fat in coconut oil is lauric acid, which is rarely found in nature. In fact, coconut oil contains the most lauric acid of any substance on Earth. Your body converts lauric acid into monolaurin, a monoglyceride that can actually destroy lipid-coated viruses such as HIV and herpes, influenza, measles, gram-negative bacteria, and protozoa such as giardia lamblia."  Dr. Mercola
  • Frankincense goes with everything, don't be afraid to combine with any of the oils I've listed.
  • Geranium is skin friendly with a very distinct aroma, it's beneficial in small amounts.
  • Dry off well and apply high quality organic coconut oil on your entire body.  Not only is it moisturizing, it's very calming for the skin and an extra layer of anti-bacterial goodness among 101 other things!

In between Bathtub Protocols

During the day if your skin itches, burns or reacts to the therapy at all, make repeated topical applications of coconut oil with a small amount of Lavender and Frankincense.  If the skin is too sensitive to touch, make a  Spray Bottle Protocol for a "no touch" application.
