Vertigo Go Round

There are several variables when it comes to Vertigo but the most common cause of vertigo is something called benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV).  Symptoms of BPPV are triggered by changes in the position of your head, such as tipping your head up or down, and by lying down, turning over or sitting up in bed. You can also feel out of balance when standing or walking.  Although BPPV can be a unsettling and bothersome, it's rarely serious except when it increases the chance of falls.

Some of the other signs and symptoms that can come and go are:

  • Dizziness
  • A sense that your surroundings are spinning or moving
  • Lightheadedness
  • Unsteadiness
  • Loss of balance
  • Blurred vision
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

If you experience dizziness along with a new extreme headache, high fever, loss of vision, leg or arm weakness, fainting, chest pain or difficulty speaking please seek medical attention immediately.

Inside your ear is a really small organ called the vestibular labyrinth. It has three loop-shaped structures (semicircular canals) with fluid and fine, hair-like sensors that monitor the rotation of your head.

Other structures (otolith organs) in your ear monitor movements of your head — up and down, right and left, back and forth — and your head's position related to gravity. These otolith organs — the utricle and saccule — contain crystals that make you sensitive to gravity.

For whatever reason, be it a head trauma or an infection, these crystals can get dislodged. When they're dislodged, they can move into one of the semicircular canals, especially when you're lying down. This causes the semicircular canal to become sensitive to head position changes it would normally not respond to. As a result, you feel dizzy.  Such tiny little crystals can wreak big havoc!

Mike has vertigo on and off, it almost always comes on after he's been sick with an internal infection...even a cold.  We use EOs like crazy for vertigo, namely pure Frankincense and Ginger and he gets through about with relative ease.  A couple of things to remember when you use essential oils as a natural alternative to synthetic medications; less is more and, applying often is better than occasional use especially when you're treating something like vertigo or cold and flu.  Pure essential oils are absorbed fast and used quickly and you'll need to be consistent!

Another tip we've found helpful is using Frankincense several ways; directly on ears and down each jawline and, either sublingually (2 drops under the tongue, pure Frank only!) or, a drop on the crown of the head and base of brain stem (suboccipital triangle).  Pure Frankincense is a game changer is so many ways!

The photo shown is a good application location for MANY protocols, especially when using essential oils for headache, anxiety and ADD/ADHD protocols.  The suboccipital triangle is in close proximity to arterial blood flow to the brain and key neurological tissue.

How to use essential oils for common vertigo: BPPV {benign paroxysmal positional vertigo}
Ingredients
Instructions
  1. To each ear apply 1 drop each Frankincense and Ginger to the inside and outside of ear, drawing the oils down underneath the jawline. The Cotton Ball protocol can be helpful too!
  2. Continue this protocol as needed throughout the day and before bed. Next, apply 1 or 2 drops of Frankincense to the suboccipital triangle and the crown of head first thing every morning. Optional: Roll Serenity Blue on the bottoms of each foot in the morning too. Optional: inhale from Peppermint or Ginger bottle for nausea as needed.

Next time you wake up and the room is spinning, remember this protocol and practice it consistently for relief and lessening of symptoms.  Other good essential oils that some have found helpful are Basil, Helichrysum and Melaleuca.
