The Ultimate Deodorant Base

I'm more than excited to share this recipe with you!  The time has come for a universal deodorant base that along with a few well chosen essential oils addresses odor, perspiration AND beautiful skin, it really is the ultimate! And here we are again, in the pursuit of the perfect DIY deodorant. The quest is worth it, knowing the ingredients is worth it, making a few extra to share with family and friends is so worth it!  Why, you ask?  Because most commercial deodorants contain highly questionable ingredients like aluminum that promote cancer and Alzheimer's, clog your pores with bacteria {therefore you stink} and block the body's natural detox mechanisms.  Did you know there are approximately 50 lymph nodes under your arms and in close proximity to the breasts?

"When you take a second to think about deodorants – antiperspirants in particular – the problem seems rather simple and self-explanatory. We apply deodorant to our armpits to block smells. But why does our body sweat in the first place? Sweating occurs as one of the body’s prime efforts to detox. So, if we’re preventing the detox, where are we sending the toxins that our bodies are trying so hard to flush out? The answer is the lymph system, which is the bodies defense against infection. Cancer is also frequently spread throughout the body when cancerous cells break off from a tumor and travel to another location in the body through the lymph system. Basically, the lymph systems works by trapping the bad stuff and flushing it out frequently via our pits. When the glands in our armpits are blocked, our breasts are right there to take in the toxins. Antiperspirants have been linked to breast cancer."

Throw away the commercial stuff, question the "all natural" commercial stuff and never look back!  Moving on... My R & D team included humans in different stages of life; a woman of a certain age {hello, I'm hormonal}, my middle age BFF and co-inventor {also hormonal}, her teenage son {awesome adolescent with severe allergies} and my daughter {thirty something}. We all used different essential oil combinations in the same base and all of us L O V E D the feel and most importantly, the results!

What's in it? Not baking soda!
While baking soda is a good deodorizer it's hard on sensitive areas like pits, my preference is, ARROWROOT.  Arrowroot powder or starch is derived from the powdered root of a large, perennial herb. It's most often used as a culinary thickener, it's silky smooth, fine texture becomes a wonderfully, comfortable absorbing agent in deodorant! I use the purest COCONUT OIL I know of.  It's organic, glyphosate tested, unrefined and virgin. I use this same high quality CO in all of my salves and balms sold in the CW Shop as well, it's good stuff and not worth scrimping on! What a wonder this SHEA BUTTER is!  It's a natural source of vitamins A and E, packed with essential fatty acids, an anti-inflammatory and of course, naturally moisturizing. A high-quality Shea Butter can also help encourage collagen production and I'm all for that. Don't forget the BEESWAX PASTILLES, not many realize how many health benefits organic, unbleached beeswax offers. Not only does it give body to skin care products, beeswax is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and acts as a humectant, drawing moisture in.  Beeswax is a natural source of vitamin A, beneficial for cell regeneration. ROSEHIP SEED OIL is one of the ingredients I'm most excited about!  RSO contains lots of essential fatty acids and one of it's more fascinating characteristics is the "dry oil" benefit!  Because Rose Hip Seed Oil soaks right into the skin without leaving a greasy residue, it's perfect in a deodorant formulation. Last but not least, VITAMIN E is a powerful, fat-soluble antioxidant that helps protect cell membranes against damage caused by free radicals. It's also a nice choice for a preservative!

empty jar final

I recommend making the entire base recipe, it's large I know, then storing what you don't use initially, in the refrigerator in a glass or PET jar.

Let's face it, it's never convenient to run out of deodorant and making your own is time consuming. Trust me on this, make one large batch and have it at the ready, this way you'll be prepared to refill your containers, experiment with essential oil preferences and, SAVE TIME!  This deodorant base will last up to a year if kept in the refrigerator. A deodorant base may seem "outside the box" but it's so darn practical, I know it works and I'm confident in recommending it!  As you can see in the photo above, one of my jars of base is empty now but my refills for using and sharing are lined up on the counter cooling :)
    Favorite Tested Essential Oil Combinations!
    {per 1 oz container}

    Each 1 oz container has a total of 30 drops of essential oils give or take a drop or two. In our experience, not only does this EO ratio successfully assist perspiration and body odor it's also a one step application for immunity boosting, hormone balancing and thyroid assisting benefits depending on your blend!  It may be helpful to know that 1 ounce equals 30ml. I'm confident this is a good dilution rate for deodorant!

    My Favorite!  (thyroid assist)

    10 drops Geranium

    10 drops Clove

    10 drops Frankincense

    Whole Family Favorite!  (teens too!)
