Once you bring chickens to homestead be it urban or rural you’ll quickly learn about a special symbiotic relationship; what goes in must come out. So let’s learn about keeping their coop clean, green and pesticide free with herbs, herbals and anti-bacterial cheep vodka (reasons for the drunken version later!).
Here a chick, there a chick, everywhere a chick chick! Backyard chickens not only provide you with fresh eggs daily, they’re so much fun to watch! love my chickens and want the very best for them and healthy eggs too. I understand that it’s up to me provide the girls with an organic, pesticide free garden to forage in (including the lawn for free range chickens). I understand that it’s up to me to provide the girls clean food scraps such as organic produce fodder from the juicer, organic feed and absolutely no pesticides in the coop! This is where herbs come in…pure essential oils and fresh herbs!
Coop care isn’t the greatest chore in the world, but it’s essential to keep it clean and fresh. I like to scatter fresh culinary herbs among the straw and in the nesting boxes. Fresh mint is one of my favorites! If you have chickens, plant a large pot with fast growing mint. Mint is invasive, that’s why I suggest you grow it in a pot but trust me, the effort is worth it. Not only will the fresh herbs repel pests like mites, they can help boost the girl’s immunity as they peck away at them and breathe in their fragrance.
Chicken Coop Herbal Spray is another tool to keep air in the coop herbal fresh, it also serves to keep pests away from the feeder and waterer if you spray lightly around them.
By now, I’m sure the burning question in your mind is, why in the world cheap vodka? Well, vodka is a natural cleanser and antibacterial, it repels bugs and can kill mold and mildew – vodka is a super versatile emulsifier of essential oils too. Because vodka is odorless its a much more pleasant alternative to the DIY favorite, white vinegar and it’s very strong aroma. Additionally, the alcohol dissipates quickly which keeps the moisture content down should you live in a wet climate! When your chickens are happy, everyone’s happy 🙂
- Add essential oils, top the bottle off with vodka. Store in a shady spot if kept outside. No need to shake before spraying, vodka is a great emulsifier of EOs!
